INTRODUCING ROGER
PERCY, NEW HAAS
FOUNDATION BOARD
PRESIDENT
It is my pleasure to serve as
the Board President on behalf
of the Saul and Dayee G. Haas
Foundation. Recently, I had
the pleasure of meeting HEAP
members, who are also in most
cases school fund coordinators.
What a delight to be among
kindred spirits. Working together,
the Haas Foundation and your
schools can accomplish a great
deal.
I have three goals for the
Foundation this year:
To raise awareness about the Haas
Foundation. Please help us, by
linking to our Web site from your
school site, PTA Web sites, etc.
To implement our first community
fundraising campaign “Give
Secondary Students a Chance!”,
to meet the increased matching
funds demand and also to begin
serving the schools that have been
on our waiting list- some for as
long as three years.
To continue to increase community
involvement through volunteering
with the Foundation. In our
first year of using the talents of
program volunteers, we saved
over $7,000. Fifteen volunteers
contributed over 400 hours of time
last year.
I look forward to meeting many
of you this year. If you are a new
school fund coordinator, I urge you
to attend an orientation session. I
believe you will find it invaluable as
you work to maximize the possible
resources available for your
students.

GIVE SECONDARY STUDENTS A CHANCE! –
First Annual Community Appeal Campaign
The Haas Foundation kicked off its first fundraising campaign on
December 5th. The Foundation currently serves 647 schools– only
one-half of the secondary schools in Washington State. Our current
financial capacity limits our ability to reach out to every school that
would like to receive Haas Foundation support.
Forty-two years ago, we started helping students at a single
school in Seattle (Garfield High School). The Foundation has
grown to over $370,000 in annual disbursements statewide,
without ever having a major fundraising effort. It is a remarkable
accomplishment of our Board and the Foundation. However,
to achieve our ultimate goal – to provide funding to meet the
immediate needs of students within all the secondary schools in
the state– we are appealing to the community to help us raise
funds.
Our goals for this year’s Annual Community Appeal Campaign,
“Give Secondary Students a Chance!” are two-fold: 1) Raise
awareness about the Haas Foundation and 2) Raise needed
funding. Specifically, we need our 39 volunteer campaigners to
raise over $30,000. This money will subsidize the growing demand
for one-to-one student support with matching grants for schools,
and will allow us to add schools from our waiting list to the grant
program.
Please let us know if you are able to help us move forward by
participating in this campaign, either as a campaigner or a donor.
Your participation is crucial to our success. The Haas Foundation
also welcomes company campaign teams of 4 to 6 people.
Should you or your company like to participate in this year’s Give
Secondary Students a Chance! campaign, please call or e-mail Mr.
Yoshikazu Funato for details. He can be reached at 206 370-6714,
or mail to: development@haasfoundation.org.
Thank you,

Leverage Haas Funds
with Other Resources
Here are some ideas for resources
that may help your school maximize
its matching grant monies – and
perhaps even raise funds beyond
that level.
Community Support...One Family
at a Time
A parent was in her child’s school
offce when she overheard the
enthusiastic response from the
school’s Haas Fund coordinator,
who had just opened her scorecard
letter and check for the year.
The parent asked what the Haas
Foundation does, and really wanted
to understand how the program
works. Upon hearing how the school
uses the matching funds, the mother
(a real estate agent) committed
to donating $25 to their school’s
matching fund for each house she
sold this school year.
The Safeway Foundation
This foundation supports a variety
of worthy causes in the following
four areas: Hunger Relief, Education,
Health and Human Services, and
Special Needs. For more information,
please contact in writing:
Cherie Myers
The Safeway Foundation
Public Affairs-Seattle
1121 124th NE
Bellevue, WA 98005
(Allow two weeks for a response.)
Washington Mutual
The WaMoola for Schools program
supports K-12 schools. All
Washington Mutual employees
and customers can enroll in the
program, picking a school to
support. They earn points for
their for their designated school
every time they use their
Washington Mutual Visa® Check
Card for everyday purchases, such
as buying groceries, going to the
movies or buying a cup of coffee.
At the end of the year, Washington
Mutual will convert the points into
a donation. Schools can use the
money for whatever they want.
Washington Mutual imposes no
spending guidelines or restrictions.

Haas School Fund Orientation Sessions
This winter, we will offer orientation sessions at our Seattle offce. These training sessions
fulfill one of the requirements listed for the year-end reporting process. New Haas School
Fund coordinators are required to either attend an orientation session in Seattle or to
view the PowerPoint tutorial on the Web site, located in the blue section of the private
school site.
The good news is that the orientation sessions in Seattle will be small-group sessions—
allowing your individual questions to be addressed in a casual setting. Space is limited, so
you must send in your RSVP no later than one week prior to the meeting to Sue Russell,
School Fund Manager at: staff@haasfoundation.org.
Returning coordinators are also welcome at the Seattle orientation sessions, but if
you have already attended a live session, or viewed last year’s PowerPoint tutorial, it
is not required that you do so again. To stay on top of program changes, we urge all
coordinators to review the updated PowerPoint tutorials on the Web site every school
year (to be updated by December 15 annually).
We invite you to bring your brown bag lunch and your questions to
one of these sessions:

As an added bonus, representatives from the Sonics and iSoldit! will provide information
on matching grant fundraising opportunities, with either a representative at each session,
or information packets.
Location for sessions: Preston, Gates & Ellis, 925 Fourth Avenue, 29th Floor, Seattle,
WA 98104-1158. Parking is available at Jerry’s Budget Garage, 801 Fourth Avenue. The

Kate Cook, Shawn John, Rod Luce, Heath Tayon, John Welsh, Gene Nelson.

The Haas Educator Ambassador Program (HEAP)
This is a heap o’ good for the schools! Currently, eighteen educators who are passionate
about the impact of the Haas Foundation in their schools are serving in this new program.
HEAP is a volunteer program, developed to advise and guide the direction of the Haas
School Fund and assist the Haas Foundation in three new areas:
Increasing the visibility of the Haas Foundation throughout the state;
Identifying potential Board members and donors; and planning
a statewide fundraiser on behalf of the Saul and Dayee G. Haas Foundation
within the next two years.
There are two representatives each from nearly all educational service districts across
the state serving as ambassadors. We are still looking for a representative from both ESD
#101 (Spokane) and ESD #112 (Vancouver). If you would like to join with the Foundation
in helping schools, please let Bonnie Hilory know, at: bhilory@haasfoundation.org.
Kudos to Bellingham High School who held a Penny Drive during homecoming
week, raising $826 towards the Saul Haas matching grant program.
