Foundation Board
President

On behalf of the board and staff I want to thank everyone for a productive year. As I reflect on the Foundation’s vision, I am pleased to share that our staff and Board are busy implementing our new strategic plan, which was approved this past May. Key components of this plan include a new mission and vision statement, rewritten goals and core beliefs, a development plan, a marketing plan and a financial plan.

HEAP Program
You may wonder how this relates to you. In October, we will have our first combined Haas Educator Ambassador Program (HEAP) and Program Committee meeting, which will launch us into a new partnership with you. Through HEAP, you will have a minimum of 2 representatives from each ESD region, for a minimum of 18 people. By November, our staff will have posted the HEAP roster on the school website. I hope that each of you will be in touch with your region’s representatives to share your ideas and comments on various aspects of the program. In particular, we would like to hear your ideas for a statewide fundraising event.

In addition, the volunteers and staff are busy creating some marketing materials for you to use, such as a PowerPoint presentation, a brochure and a tool kit for partnering with the Haas Foundation. Working together, we can continue to support young people at crucial times in their lives.

Thank you for your help and support. The work you do is important, and without your help we could not take care of all the schools within the state that rely on Haas Foundation funding to meet the needs of their students.

Jon Galt Bowman
President, Board of Directors

Big Impacts with Small Gifts

This year we are sharing your success stories. Don’t be surprised if you get an email from us telling you to visit our new Web site to see a story featured from your school. Here are just a couple of examples that we gathered this summer–watch for more stories in future newsletters and on the Web site.

Mountain View High School, Evergreen School District #114, ESD #112
When one student’s ailing mother was moved into a health care home, he had no way to visit her. His grades and interest in school began to slip due to the worry and pressures of his life. The Haas School Fund provided two months of bus fare and he was able to visit his mother regularly. With her encouragement, Sean is now back on the right track with his life and schoolwork.

Tolt Middle School, Riverview School District #407, ESD #121
A girl at our school couldn’t afford a yearbook, but being creative and resourceful, she decided to make her own by taking pictures of her friends, intending to glue them to paper and have them sign the pages. When asked if she would rather have a school yearbook she said ‘yes’ and started crying from happiness. We were able to buy her the yearbook with our Haas School Fund.

Haas Foundation Road Trip

During May and June, Haas Foundation staff and board members traveled around the state, meeting 313 school fund coordinators. Two kinds of information were the most-requested from you at these meetings: other grant resources that might be used to support and leverage Haas Foundation funds, and how to implement a matching grant program. See below for updates on these topics. Thank you for being part of the Haas community-and for sharing your insights and stories with us. The following people won drawings for an extra $110 for their school fund:

Dennis Cleary, Whatcom Middle School

Shawn John, PACE High School
