Fund Raising and Friend Raising
HEAP and our development committee and staff have outdone themselves in creating a rousing statewide, bi-annual event to build our Foundation community and support Washington students in need. It’s the Haas At Home Gala and On-line Auction, during October 2006. And we need your help to make it a success!
Calling all Captains!
Across the state, anytime between October 13th and October 29th, at least 20 “captains” will be organizing at-home dinners for 8 to 10 people each. How they provide the dinners is up to their imaginations: dinners they cook themselves or cater and serve in their own homes, or dinners they ask a restaurant to donate and help deliver to the guests at their own residences - a very elegant meals-on-wheels! (The suggested minimum donation per guest is $50.) So far 11 captains have signed on, including my wife Penny and me, and if you’d like to join the ranks please register on our volunteer page.
To tempt the guests . . .
There will be a gift basket provided for each couple or single attending one of the dinners – and for the captains as well, of course! Volunteer lead Nancy McKernon is coordinating the collection of Starbucks coffee, chocolates, wine or soda, and our on-line Gala Auction catalogue, that will accompany our Foundation DVD and story book in each gift basket.
Going, going, gone!
The on-line auction will run from October 13th through midnight on November 5th. It is being hosted by eBay’s non-profit division, Mission Fish, thanks to Frances LeSourd’s help. There are two categories of auction items: weekend get-away packages, (through the efforts of lead coordinator and HEAP member Wendy Ross from Yakima), and sports experiences and memorabilia, (with the help of lead coordinator Heath Tayon from Mt. Vernon, also a HEAP member).
And of course we need your help with this too! All of the auction packages need to be procured by September 1st. If you know people who might want to donate an item, please contact our Executive Director, Bonnie Hilory, so we can get a procurement form out to them to sign.
And if you have any suggestions for us, or want to get involved, please let Bonnie know, (bhilory@haasfoundation.org). We’d love to hear from you!
Cheers!
This unique grassroots effort will help spread the word about the impact of the Foundation and celebrate its 820 school partners. On behalf of our Board of Directors, I want to thank the HEAP members, volunteers, school fund coordinators, and especially the terrific event co-chairs, board member Jim Menzies and HEAP member Richard Jones of Battleground, for organizing and supporting this statewide effort.

Another Year of Big Plans
As I enter my second year as Executive Director, I think of the special people who create Haas Foundation magic daily. It starts with personnel in the school buildings who take time to notice students in need and refer them to the Haas Fund coordinator, and continues with the coordinator taking time to solve the students’ concerns.
Another group of special people are our eighteen HEAP members (Haas Educator Ambassador Program). They represent all nine Educational Service district areas in Washington State and have become increasingly important as we implement our first statewide event, “Haas At Home Gala and Online Auction.” Four of the HEAP members met over the summer as active members of the steering committee for the Gala, and have taken on leadership roles in the event.
The last group I want to recognize is our Board of Directors. These dedicated volunteers meet twice a year as a whole and then serve on committees, helping to set policy, fundraise, and inform others about the Foundation.
This summer we have been very busy hosting some of our school coordinators at Seattle Storm games. We are hoping that more schools will participate in raising matching funds through this program (which you can learn about on the website).
As many of you know, we have gone through some challenges with technology this past quarter. Our website crashed during the year-end period, because so many people were trying to use it at the same time. We learned that our original database tool was not designed for multiple users. We have changed to a new site host who is able to support a more robust tool. We will complete migrating all of our data to this platform by the end of August. In addition to this change we are designing and implementing a communication log which will store messages between the Foundation office and each school. This will help us manage transitions as school personnel turn over. Stay tuned for technology updates during the coming year.
Mailing this newsletter out with your checks, in addition to sending it by email, is something we’re experimenting with. Please let us know what you think – are you more likely to make use of the information if you receive it on paper or electronically? If you want to look something up, past newsletters are archived on the website under About Us in the Historical documents section. If you are a new Haas coordinator we suggest you review these past newsletters.
We will have many opportunities to work together throughout the coming year to achieve the mission of the foundation. Our team looks forward to supporting you as you make life better for students who need a helping hand.

Congratulations to the following schools who received a perfect score of ten on their year-end report scorecard. As a reward, these schools will receive increases of 5-10% in their grant funds for the coming school year. Their diligence with the reporting process helps us to keep administrative costs down, and we are able to give the savings back to schools to help more students.

Wide-ranging Expertise & International Flair
Three of our summer volunteers worked out of our new office and had a great time getting to know one another. All three departed in August and we miss them! They provided flexible, professional-level help in many areas, and together saved the foundation over $13,450 based on the volunteer hours they contributed.
Clement Riehl was our full-time Communications Coordinator intern from France. He came to Seattle this spring after attending the Illinois State University for two quarters. Clement helped schools with their year-end reports, supported the statewide event, planned the Sonics and Storm events, and documented standard operating procedures. Clement was key in keeping the office sane and functioning well while Sue was on vacation in June. His ready smile and warm personality endeared him to everyone here. Clement enjoys a mean game of tennis and ranked as high as # 3 in a local league. Clement has returned to France, but may become a virtual volunteer helping us with communication projects as he continues to practice his English.
Ariel Loh is a graphic artist from Malaysia. She designed the Foundation’s educator newsletters and handled graphics for us on many special projects. Always positive and helpful, her quick assessment and great design ideas have been invaluable to the Foundation staff. Ariel is married to Kian-Chai Ng and lives in Shoreline. In September she is going to Malaysia for an extended visit with her family.
Debanjan Majumdar is a Marketing Coordinator from Calcutta, India. He originally started with us as an intern from Seattle Pacific University and has stayed on as a volunteer. He helps us with public appearances and community presentations—particularly at Rotary Clubs where the Foundation raises awareness of ways the clubs can assist the schools in their service area. Debanjan graduated this spring from Seattle Pacific University with a B.A. degree in Business.

New Schools Enrolled through the Generosity of Donors
We are celebrating the success of our first annual campaign, Give Secondary Students a Chance!. Our goals were to increase awareness of the Saul & Dayee Haas Foundation, and to raise $55,000 to supplement
our endowment. We surpassed this goal, raising $63,060 during the campaign. This money will provide matching funds to increase grants already funded, and allow us to provide grants to new schools, some of whom have been on our wait list for over two years.
Please help us welcome the following newly funded Haas Foundation schools:

Remember the Impact
Three years ago a tough-acting ninth grader came to our school. He was rumored to be flirting with gang affiliation as he began to fail all his classes during his freshman year. However, this student didn’t enter high school without supporters. Middle school counselors and teachers told us that he enjoyed wrestling, and that there was something special about him, if only he could make some positive connections. He landed in a class taught by the head wrestling coach. After a discussion with this troubled student, the coach sent him to see his counselor, who is an assistant wrestling coach and our Saul Haas fund manager.
The Haas fund opened a door for him. Without worrying how his A.S.B. Card, shoes, warm-ups, head gear, and gym bags were going to be paid for, he started to participate and stay connected with a positive group of peers and coaches. Three years later he is a college-bound, straight-A student who has already received recognition of excellence from local colleges and universities.
Recently, this student came to the counseling office where he stood in the doorway with a proud, yet embarrassed grin on his face. His counselor recognized that the brochure the student held was for a summer wrestling camp. So as to not force him to ask for money, the counselor simply asked, “Do you need some help paying for that?” After a short talk, the young man stood up and gave his counselor a handshake and a sheepish “manly” hug. “Thank you very much”, he said, as he walked out of the office with a sense of purpose and direction.
The resilience of this young man has amazed us, and we are very glad for an organization like the Haas Foundation that helps students through difficult situations.
