"... education was an ornament in prosperity and a refuge in adversity." - Diogenes Laėrtius, attributed to Aristotle

We've had an amazing school year, and as we wrap things up for the summer we'd like to thank you - our school coordinators! Your compassionate awareness of the needs of your students is the critical component that creates a refuge in adversity for them.

Year-end Report Tips from Sue Russell

Year-end reports Year-end reports are due by June 30, 2007. When you submit them accurately and on time it helps us to keep our administrative costs down, and channel more money to your students. Here are some tips to help you make your online submission quickly and accurately:

    • If you're feeling a little rusty about filing the year end report, an easy way to get up to speed is to view the PowerPoint tutorial which is on the Haas extranet site.

    • Don't forget to complete the year-end scorecard elements. These can be entered any time throughout the year, but must be done before you submit your report in order to earn the highest possible score.

    • The coordinator training class or the PowerPoint tutorial is a one-time requirement, but confirmation that you've completed this training must be made every year on the scorecard report to receive a point for this.

    • Don't wait until the last day to enter your disbursements to the website. By entering them as you make them throughout the year, you will save yourself time and frustration when finishing the report.

Book Release: Inspiring Dreams, Actions & Generosity
 Haas Foundation Stories

Book cover Inspiring Dreams, Actions & Generosity, our book of stories, gives moving personal accounts of students helped across the state by the Foundation. Yes, these are the same stories that you provide us with each year!

Danae Moore, the book project manager, did a fantastic job in creating this first edition. She marshalled a large team of volunteers to review, edit and graphically design more than 430 stories to create this first edition of the book. It was a herculean task, well done.

Would you like to receive a book? It is given to donors who contribute $250 or more to the Foundation annually.

 Pathways to Parity Breakfast

Penny LeGate Our new book, Inspiring Dreams, Actions and Generosity, was unveiled at the Pathways to Parity Breakfast on May 4th. Speakers at the breakfast included Bob Ratliffe, local business leader, Penny LeGate from KIRO News, Raj Manhas, Superintendent of the Seattle Public Schools, and Roger Percy, President of the Haas Foundation Board of Directors.

Debbie Williams and Kim Lubin, HEAP members from Pasco and the Key Peninsula spoke about how important Haas Foundation funds are to them as they work with children in their schools.

Delena Neeves, a past Foundation recipient, spoke about the life of a teenager living as a foster child, and how the assistance in purchasing a choir gown helped her to discover her talent as a singer, and escape being defined by what she didn't have, and couldn't do, which is so often experienced by foster children.

The Pathways to Parity breakfast was a great success - with delicious food, inspiring student artwork, and a warm and positive chance for us to tell our story to the community.

 Haas Educator Ambassador Program (HEAP)
 Welcoming New Members

HEAP Meeting HEAP volunteers advise and guide the direction of the Haas School Fund, assisting primarily in three areas: increasing our Foundation's visibility throughout the state, identifying possible new board members and donors, and helping to create a state-wide fundraiser for the Foundation.

The Foundation welcomes five new HEAP members:
Christine Anderson-Bryan from Prosser High School, ESD 123
Dawn Ashbach from Anacortes Senior High School, ESD 189
Cheri Pepka from Liberty High School in Issaquah, ESD 121
LaVerne Rettkowski from Reardan High School, ESD 101
Steve Wiley from Squalicum High School, ESD 189.

We still have one opening for a HEAP member in each of the following ESD's: 101, 105, 112, 114, 121 and 171. If you work in a school with students (as a teacher, counselor, coach, principal, superintendent, or support staff person) and are passionate about the impact of the Haas Foundation on your learning community, please contact Bonnie Hilory to find out more.  School Coordinators and Principals: See the Seattle Storm from a Luxury Suite!

Storm Logo Haas School Fund coordinators and principals are invited to celebrate our successful year by joining us for a Seattle Storm basketball game. You and one guest will be VIPs in a suite for the evening for an affordable $10, which will defray some of the cost of food and drink in the suite.

Reservations are on a first-come first-serve basis. Confirmation for tickets, information on parking, and other details will be sent to you in an e-mail in late June.

At the game you'll cheer on the Storm, have a chance to learn more about the Sonics and Storm fundraising opportunity for your matching fund, and meet some of the Haas staff and volunteers.

When you email us please provide: your name and your guest's name, your school, city, home e-mail address, and home phone number (since we may not be able to reach you at school this summer). Please also let us know your 1st and 2nd choice for games.

 Creative Fundraising Idea
 Bonnie Hilory, Executive Director

WASBO2 In this picture I am standing with Debbie Williams, a HEAP member from the PASCO area. Debbie turned me on to an effortless way to raise money. We shared a booth with Cookie Lee Fine Jewelry at the Washington Association of School Business Officials conference this year. Jodi M. Stoddard, the Cookie Lee representative, shared 25% of her gross sales with the Haas Foundation and presented us with a very generous gift of $459.50 following the one and a half day exhibit. Ms. Stoddard is happy to do this for schools or other organizations.

We will be featuring ideas for raising funds toward your matching grants and raising awareness of the Haas Foundation in our next newsletter. If you have ideas on this please email them to me and we may include them in the newsletter! I can be reached at bhilory@haasfoundation.org.

I want to thank each of you for making the young people in your school a priority.
