"Give Secondary Students a Chance!"
First Annual Community Appeal Campaign Kicks off this Winter
December 2005-February 2006
The Haas Foundation will kick off its first fundraising campaign on the first week in December. The Haas Foundation serves 647 schools in Washington, but are aware that this is only half of the secondary schools in the state. The need is greater than we can meet with our current financial capacity.

Forty-two years ago, we started helping students at a single school in Seattle (Garfield High School). The foundation has grown to disburse over $370,000 annually statewide without ever having a major fundraising effort. It is a remarkable accomplishment of our board and the foundation. However, to move closer to our ultimate goal - to provide funding to meet the immediate needs of students within all the secondary schools, we are appealing to the community to raise funds.

Our goals for this year's Annual Community Appeal Campaign titled "Give Secondary Students a Chance!" are two-fold: 1) raise awareness about the Haas Foundation and 2) raise needed funding. Our fundraising goal is for 39 volunteer campaigners to raise over $30,000. This money will subsidize the growing demand for one-to- one student support with matching grants for schools, and will allow us to add schools from our waiting list to the grant program.

Please let us know if you would like to participate in this campaign as a campaigner or a donor. Your participation is very important to our success. As a campaigner, attendance at a training session and the kick off dinner is required. The Haas Foundation also welcomes company campaign teams of 4 to 6 people. Should you or your company like to participate in this year's Give Secondary Students a Chance! campaign, please e-mail or call Kazu for details.

Our Mission

The Saul and Dayee G. Haas Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life among needy secondary students in communities throughout the state of Washington, by supporting schools to encourage students to stay in school, return to school or get involved within their learning community.

Learn about some of the ways we work to fulfill this mission.
On behalf of the young people, the Saul and Dayee G. Haas Founda- tion supports we acknowledge the generosity and sponsorship of the iSOLD It company. This company started in June 2004 and supports schools with a fundraising program, selling items on eBay. iSOLD It offers a simple, innovative way for schools to raise money towards their matching grant goal and beyond.

Kenneth Byrne President & CEO states, "We are very excited to be working with the Haas foundation to further our network of schools and non-profit foundations using our eBay and online tools and services to raise those critical funds necessary to keep your new and valued educational programs going strong. With the lower overhead costs, easier implementation, continued use, and higher returns our services offer, we seek to dramatically increase school's and each fundraising group within your school's abilities to reach their fund- raising goals."

Bonnie Hilory, Haas Foundation Executive Director, reflects: "When schools register with iSOLD It, parents and community members can drop off items to sell, and donate the proceeds to the schools. It's a built-in, flexible, year-round fundraiser. "iSOLD It"

The iSOLD It staff writes the descriptions, photographs the donated items, and markets them on eBay. Schools can coordinate with the iSOLD It team for a one day event where iSOLD It employees bring a truck and haul items away, or they can register and arrange for com- munity members to drop off items year-round. To learn more, click on the iSOLD It logo at www.haasfoundation.org.

The Saul and Dayee G. Haas Foundation is a registered iSOLD It organization, so if your school is not yet registered please consider donating items to the Haas Foundation.

If your organization would like to be a Haas Foundation Sponsor you must donate a minimum of $3,000 and be aligned with the mission of the foundation.

Development Director
(Since Sep. 05)
It is an honor to serve as a Development Director for the foundation. I recognize the importance of providing students equal educational opportunities and admire the significant work of the foundation. I notice that some may think a large amount of money is needed to help needy students, but with a little financial assistance, students are motivated to stay in school and learn much to improve their lives. This is what the Haas Foundation is all about. Each year, we receive hundreds of stories from schools illustrating how the Haas funds were spent. I would like to share a few stories that show the impact of your donation.

Matching Grant Program

The Matching Grant Program began seven years ago as a pilot program with private and parochial schools, and it expanded to public schools in the following year.

The formula of this program is simple?if a school raised funds and deposited them into their Haas School Fund, the foundation would match up to a limit?one-half of their regular school fund grant for that year. So, if a school?s regular grant from the foundation is $500 for the year, the school has an opportunity to double it. If the school raises money, the foundation will match up to an additional $250. This program offers schools an opportunity to create their own fundraising mechanisms ?especially for public schools that normally don?t have fundraising mechanisms. By combining the money raised and Haas School Funds, schools will be able to provide better support to their needy students.

This past year (2004-05), many schools far exceeded the one-half-limitation. 154 participating schools (24% of our beneficiaries) raised a total of $81, 489?43% more than the foundation matched ($46,896). As a result, the needy students received more support than what the regular grants could provide. It shows a great potential of fundraising capacity among schools for supporting students.

Our Stories

Franklin High School
(Seattle School District)

One of our students comes from a single- parent home, and humble beginnings. He has a 9 year-old sister who needs his consistent guidance and supervision. The Saul Haas Foundation has created the opportunity for him to participate at the varsity levels of football and basketball. He now is receiving letters from colleges for possible scholarships. Involvement in athletics has helped him concentrate his academic focus to maintain an above- average standard of eligibility G.P.A. of 3.1 and to make healthy life choices. He is considered a leader in the school community, and many students look to him for mentoring.

Curtis Senior High School
(University Place School District)

We used our Saul Haas account to purchase a choir gown for one of our sophomore girls so that she could participate in a choir festival. Her family is on welfare and both parents were unemployed at the time. These funds allowed this young lady to participate in the festival without being embarrassed.
